Is Narnia a book that contains all of Christian Mythology?
Or another fantasy novel that made use of it. After all Greek and Chinese mythology has a good run so far.
The world being flat and unmovable, while sitting on pillars.
Sea monsters guarding the edges of the sea.
Angels and Devils flying around, polymorphisms.
Daily miracles, bread falling from the sky, people living in fishes, walking on water, pillars of salt, lotsa smiting, water turning into wine.
a pair of animals and seven of the same kind of animal on the ark at the same time despite it being logically impossible. 2=7
I think it would be very difficult for even a series of 7 books to include “all” of Christian mythology. Even the Bible doesn’t have all of Christian mythology – much of it has emerged from other texts and writings by Christian philosophers and authors. Furthermore, the Chronicles of Narnia more or less pick up starting with the New Testament (although they are not intended to be a Christian allegory, it’s hard to deny that Aslan is a Christ figure). So there’s half of the Bible that isn’t represented in the series.
Lewis intended for these books to have a Christian message, as he was an extremely devout person himself (much of his non-fiction deals with Christianity). But he also borrowed from other sources – folktales like Santa Claus, Greek mythology like fauns and centaurs, the tradition of talking animals in fairy tales, Arthurian romances, magic, etc.
So while the Chronicles of Narnia are indeed rife with Christian mythology, they certainly don’t contain all of it. And it’s one tradition of many that holds court in the stories, even if it is the most important to the author.
