International or Local School?

Hi, I was born in Singapore, but my family moved to Hong Kong 2 or 3 years ago. My first Language is English and I can only understand a minimal amount of chinese. I can only speak a little. Anyway, my mother put me in the Singapore International School and I studied there through Grade 5 and 6.

But I left the school and started 7th grade in a local school. The English there isn’t very good, and their chinese is very difficult to understand. Up till now, I don’t have friends. They all think I’m weird. I have tried studying there for a year, but I can’t take it anymore. Even the English teacher told me himself that he thinks I would be better off in an International school earlier today. I know he’s right. I have tried to talk to my mom, but she hasn’t listened. I am going to try again by telling her what the teacher said.

It’s the summer holiday now, and I feel like its my only chance to go back to International school. Do you think I should?

Hi, I am a Singaporean as well, and have lived in Hong Kong for some time. Hong Kongers usually speak Cantonese and not chinese.

You are finding it difficult to integrate into Hong Kong culture is not surprising, considering that Singapore is an English speaking country whereas the majority of the Hong Kongers trend to speak Cantonese and write in traditional chinese. However, if you are going to live in Hong Kong, it would be better for you to try to integrate yourself into the culture of Hong Kong, and learn to make friends in Hong Kong. I think this is why your parents would like you to be in a local school. In this case, this route is not easy, and evidenced from your frustrations, and you have a lot of catching up to do in Cantonese.

If you continue to study in international school, you may be happier in the short term, but will face problem finding a job or integrating later on, especially when you graduated.

At the end of the day, you have to make your own choice and decision. Are you willing to take up the challenge of helping yourself integrate into the Hong Kong culture? ;)
